At first, things seemed fine. But when Bawang Putih’s father eventually fell ill and died, the warmth in the house disappeared with him.
With no one left to protect her, Bawang Putih became the family’s unpaid servant. She was cooking, cleaning, washing, and working from sunrise to sundown while Bawang Merah and her mother lounged comfortably.
Life as a Servant in Her Own Home
Every single day, Bawang Putih woke before dawn and worked until she could barely keep her eyes open. Meanwhile, Bawang Merah slept in, demanded the best food, wore the prettiest clothes, and complained constantly that Bawang Putih wasn’t working fast enough.
The stepmother was no better. She scolded Bawang Putih for the smallest things and always found an excuse to give her more work. Yet through it all, Bawang Putih never lost her kindness. She never answered cruelty with cruelty, and that, as we’ll see, made all the difference.
The Clothes Swept Away by the River
One afternoon, while Bawang Putih was washing clothes by the river, a piece of cloth was swept away by the current. She ran along the riverbank, desperately trying to retrieve it. Not because it was hers, but because her stepmother would punish her harshly if it were lost.
The cloth eventually floated to a small house further downstream. When Bawang Putih knocked on the door to ask for it, she was greeted by an old woman, Nenek, frail but sharp-eyed, living entirely alone.

When she got home and cut the pumpkin open, it was filled with gold, jewels, and beautiful fabrics. Her stepmother and Bawang Merah were furious with jealousy.
Bawang Merah Tries Her Luck
The stepmother immediately hatched a plan. She went to the river, threw a piece of cloth into the current herself, then sent Bawang Merah to “find” it at the old woman’s house.
Bawang Merah knocked on Nenek’s door, and just like her stepsister, was asked to stay and help for a few days. But Bawang Merah’s version of “helping” was half-hearted at best. She cooked carelessly, cleaned lazily, and complained about everything. She didn’t care about the old woman at all. She only cared about the reward waiting at the end.
When it was finally time to go, Nenek again brought out two pumpkins, one large, one small. Without a second’s hesitation, Bawang Merah grabbed the large one, certain it would contain even greater riches than her stepsister’s.
She ran home triumphantly. The stepmother waited in excitement. Together, they cut open the pumpkin, and out came snakes, insects, and all manner of unpleasant things, scattering across the room in chaos.
