Sop Buntut Bu Menuk has three branches that are all easy to find. I personally visited branch 2 on Jalan Kaliurang KM 5.5. The location is very strategic, right on the main road, so you don’t need to struggle to find it. Just type “Sop Buntut Bu Menuk” in Google Maps, and you can choose which branch is closest to your travel route.

Besides this second branch, there’s also Sop Buntut Bu Menuk 1 on Jalan Kaliurang KM 7.8 and Sop Buntut Bu Menuk 3 on Jalan Godean KM 5. All are easily accessible and have quite prominent signboards, so you won’t get lost even if it’s your first time visiting. Just follow the directions and the clear signboards.

Sop Buntut Bu Menuk is indeed famous for its rich-flavored main dish – savory oxtail soup with broth and very tender meat. But don’t be mistaken, this restaurant also offers various other equally tempting dishes, such as beef rib soup, beef soup, and free-range chicken.

Besides the classic boiled oxtail soup, you must try other variants like fried oxtail soup or grilled oxtail soup which are equally delicious. Sop Buntut Bu Menuk also provides boxed rice options for various events and practical frozen food to take as souvenirs or vacation supplies.

For beverages, there are various refreshing, warming, and healthy options available. Don’t miss unique menu items like ginger milk, wedang uwuh, tape milk, and saparella that are worth trying.

My Order

A table filled with traditional Indonesian dishes including oxtail soup, fried mushrooms, sambal, fresh lime, iced tea, and fruit drinks at Sop Buntut Bu Menuk restaurant.
Authentic Indonesian dining experience at Sop Buntut Bu Menuk, featuring their signature oxtail soup and a variety of side dishes.

Here I ordered several signature menus: Oxtail Soup, Grilled Ribs, and Fried Oxtail. The Grilled Ribs and Fried Oxtail menus are served with fresh soup broth as accompaniment. Besides these three main menus, I also ordered emping crackers and fried lung to complete the meal.

Three refreshing drinks at Sop Buntut Bu Menuk: iced tea, iced orange juice, and iced fermented cassava with milk.
A trio of favorite drinks. Iced tea, iced orange, and the unique iced tape susu. Perfect companions to Sop Buntut Bu Menuk’s hearty dishes.

For drinks, I chose iced orange juice, plain iced tea, and iced tape milk. Tape is made from fermented glutinous rice, which is green in color and sweet in taste. The milk in the iced tape milk isn’t 100% fresh cow’s milk, but uses sweetened condensed milk. The orange juice at Sop Buntut Bu Menuk restaurant tends to be sweet, so if you don’t like it too sweet, you should order it with less sugar. Meanwhile, the plain iced tea tastes refreshing with the distinctive aroma of jasmine tea.

Oxtail Soup

One bowl of Oxtail Soup contains three pieces of beef oxtail with thick meat and tender texture, making it easy to eat with a spoon. The broth is clear, savory, and rich with beef stock flavor. The spices blend well together, plus carrot and tomato pieces that provide a balance of sweet and sour taste.

I personally like adding lime juice and a little sambal. The red sambal isn’t too spicy, so it’s still safe to try for foreigners as long as it’s not excessive. Meanwhile, the green sambal is much spicier because it’s made from green bird’s eye chili, so it’s best to taste it in small amounts only.

As accompaniments, I highly recommend fried lung and emping crackers. Emping crackers, made from melinjo nuts, taste savory and slightly bitter, perfectly paired with Oxtail Soup. The fried lung is also delicious, though the portion isn’t too large.

Fried Oxtail

Sop Buntut Goreng: crispy fried oxtail served with savory broth, a signature twist at Sop Buntut Bu Menuk.

Fried Oxtail is served in three large pieces. The meat is tender and coated with seasoned flour that makes it even more delicious. This dish is also accompanied by soup broth so it doesn’t feel too dry. Although the meat is quite soft, I personally feel more comfortable eating Fried Oxtail with my hands.

Grilled Ribs

Tender and flavorful Sop Iga Bakar (grilled beef ribs). One of the favorite dishes at Sop Buntut Bu Menuk.

Of the three main menus I ordered, Grilled Ribs is my favorite. One portion contains one large beef rib piece with thick meat attached to the bone. The meat texture is somewhat tough, making it slightly difficult to cut with a spoon, but the taste remains satisfying.

The grilling seasoning uses a combination of sweet soy sauce and signature spices, creating a sweet-savory taste that blends with the aroma of grilled beef. For some people, the taste might be too sweet, so I suggest pouring the soup broth over white rice and eating it together with the Grilled Ribs. Add lime juice and a little sambal to the soup broth to create a fresher and more balanced flavor variation.

Sop Buntut Bu Menuk restaurant, located on Jalan Kaliurang Km 5.5, has an interior with a strong Javanese nuance. I also love the atmosphere because there are many green plants placed in the corners of the room and decorating the restaurant walls. The atmosphere becomes even more serene with Javanese keroncong music playing, perfectly matching the concept of this place.

I came around 12:30 PM, right during lunch hour. Fortunately, at that time, the restaurant was still quite quiet with many empty chairs available. However, around 1:30 PM when we finished eating, the restaurant began to fill with visitors. Almost all tables on the 1st floor were occupied by people who came for lunch.
