Cultural Notes
The name “Sam Poo Kong” refers to Zheng He (also spelled Cheng Ho), the famous Chinese Muslim admiral who led several maritime expeditions across Southeast Asia in the early 15th century. His voyages were not military conquests but diplomatic and trade missions, which is why the site is remembered as a symbol of peaceful cultural exchange rather than conflict. The four “kelenteng” (Chinese temples) mentioned in the text reflect the blending of Chinese, Javanese, and Islamic traditions in the area — a distinctive feature of Semarang’s cultural landscape. Visiting Sam Poo Kong today, learners can see how local communities continue to honor this shared history through festivals, temple rituals, and architecture that combines red-and-gold Chinese design elements with the surrounding Javanese environment.
