Let’s delve into this poignant tale of true love, betrayal, and kindness that can overcome even the darkest of curses.
The Origins of the Golden Snail Legend
Keong Mas is one of the most beloved folktales from Java. Long ago in the Kingdom of Daha, located in the Kediri region of East Java, there lived a wise king named Kertamarta. The king had two beautiful daughters who were the pride of the kingdom: Dewi Candra Kirana and her younger sister, Dewi Galuh.
Did You Know? The Kingdom of Daha (also known as Kadiri) was a Hindu-Buddhist kingdom that flourished in East Java from the 11th to 13th centuries. This legend is believed to originate from the kingdom’s golden age.
Although both were princesses, Candra Kirana was more beloved by the people. Her beauty wasn’t just physical; it radiated from her noble character, graceful manners, and kindness toward everyone. Whenever she walked through the market or visited her people, she was always greeted with smiles and respectful bows.
Seeds of Jealousy in the Daha Kingdom
Seeing her sister so cherished by the people, Dewi Galuh began to feel jealous. She thought it unfair that she, who was also beautiful and a princess, didn’t receive similar attention. At first, the jealousy was just a small whisper in her heart, but gradually it grew into a monster of hatred that burned ever brighter.
Main Characters
Dewi Candra Kirana – The eldest princess of the Daha Kingdom, beautiful with noble character, beloved by the people for her kindness, betrothed to Raden Inu Kertapati.
Dewi Galuh – The youngest princess of the Daha Kingdom, jealous of her sister’s success, ambitious, and desiring to become empress, harboring feelings for Raden Inu.
Raden Inu Kertapati – A handsome prince from the Kahuripan Kingdom, heir to the throne, loyal and brave, truly loves Candra Kirana.
Mbok Rondo – A kind-hearted widow from Dadapan Village, simple yet generous, Candra Kirana’s savior.
The situation became more complicated when King Kertamarta decided to arrange a marriage between Candra Kirana and Raden Inu Kertapati, a handsome prince from the Kahuripan Kingdom who was heir to the throne. Candra Kirana accepted the arrangement happily because she already knew and loved Raden Inu.
But for Dewi Galuh, this news was like a bolt of lightning on a clear day. She had secretly harbored feelings for Raden Inu and hoped to one day become the empress. Now all her hopes were dashed, replaced by blinding rage. This jealousy would lead to the tragic Keong Mas transformation.
The Curse That Created Keong Mas
Driven by unbridled hatred and envy, Dewi Galuh made a decision that would change everything. She went to see an evil witch who lived on the edge of the forest. In exchange for a bag of gold, she asked the witch to get rid of Candra Kirana forever.
One afternoon when Candra Kirana was walking in the palace garden, the witch suddenly appeared before her. Sensing danger, Candra Kirana tried to flee, but the witch swiftly recited a spell. Thick black smoke emerged from her staff, enveloping Candra Kirana’s body. In an instant, she transformed into a golden snail, beautiful but small and helpless.
Dewi Galuh, who had been watching from behind a tree, emerged with a satisfied laugh. The witch told her that this curse would only be broken if Candra Kirana met someone who truly loved her. Not wanting to take any chances, Dewi Galuh immediately threw the golden snail into the swiftly flowing river and spread false news that Candra Kirana had disappeared in the forest.
A New Life with Mbok Rondo
Candra Kirana, now in her Keong Mas form, was carried away by the river current far from the Daha Kingdom. In her small snail form, she could only surrender to fate. After drifting for days, the golden snail got caught in a net belonging to a simple widow called Mbok Rondo.
Seeing the extraordinarily beautiful golden snail, Mbok Rondo decided to take it home to care for it. She placed the golden snail in a water jar filled with clean water in her humble home.
The Miracle at Mbok Rondo's House
Unknown to Mbok Rondo, the Keong Mas held a magical secret. Each morning when the sun rose, the golden snail transformed back into human form until midday. Candra Kirana used this time to repay Mbok Rondo’s kindness by cleaning the house and cooking various delicious dishes.
Every time Mbok Rondo returned from the fields, she was always surprised to find her house clean and various delicious foods laid out on the dining table. Fluffy white rice, savory vegetable soup, crispy fried fish, and even sweet market snacks. Mbok Rondo kept wondering who had been so kind to her.
This continued until one day Mbok Rondo decided to return home early. She crept into the kitchen and heard someone cooking. How shocked she was when she saw a beautiful young woman cooking in her kitchen.
Candra Kirana could no longer hide her identity. With tears streaming down her face, she told Mbok Rondo everything that had happened to her about her sister’s jealousy, the evil witch’s curse, and her hope of meeting Raden Inu. Mbok Rondo felt deeply sorry for her and comforted her with a warm embrace. From that day on, they lived like mother and daughter.
A Journey Filled with Obstacles
Meanwhile, in the Daha Kingdom, Raden Inu Kertapati sensed something was wrong with the news of Candra Kirana’s disappearance. His heart, which truly loved his betrothed, refused to believe that Candra Kirana was gone. He was certain she was still alive somewhere, waiting for him.
With firm determination, Raden Inu decided to disguise himself as a poor wanderer and began a long journey searching for Candra Kirana throughout the land.
Learning of Raden Inu’s departure, Dewi Galuh panicked. She immediately summoned the witch and ordered her to thwart the search. The witch transformed herself into a talking black crow and flew off to find Raden Inu.
During his journey, Raden Inu was surprised by a crow claiming to know Candra Kirana’s whereabouts. His innocent and longing heart immediately believed and followed the crow’s directions, unaware that he was being led astray.
Help from a Mystical Elder
During his exhausting journey, Raden Inu saw an old man who looked very pale and weak leaning against a tree. Although he himself was tired and hungry, Raden Inu’s noble heart was moved. He gave all his food provisions to the old man.
While the elder ate, Raden Inu told him about his search and the magical crow giving him directions. Hearing about the crow, the old man’s eyes suddenly gleamed sharply. In an instant, the elder raised his staff and released a blinding blue light.
The light struck the crow directly. The bird burst into flames and screamed in pain, then transformed back into its true form as the evil witch who fled while cursing.
It turned out the old man was a wise, mystical master. He had been testing Raden Inu’s heart by disguising himself as someone in need. Having witnessed Raden Inu’s kindness, he decided to help. The elder told him about the witches and Dewi Galuh’s evil deeds, and gave him the valuable clue that Candra Kirana was in Dadapan Village in a cottage belonging to a widow.
The Reunion That Broke the Curse
With renewed spirit, Raden Inu continued his journey following the elder’s directions. After days of walking, he finally arrived in Dadapan Village. Tired and thirsty, he stopped at a simple cottage to ask for water.
When Raden Inu knocked on the door, and it opened, time seemed to stand still. Before him stood the woman he had searched for across the entire land. Dewi Candra Kirana in her true, beautiful form.
Both Candra Kirana and Mbok Rondo were shocked to see Raden Inu’s arrival. Candra Kirana’s eyes filled with tears, unable to believe her betrothed had truly found her. Raden Inu couldn’t hold back his tears either, overwhelmed with joy at finally finding his soulmate.
This emotional reunion, filled with true love,e finally broke the curse that had bound Candra Kirana. A miracle occurred, Candra Kirana’s body glowed brightly, and she no longer transformed into a golden snail. The Keong Mas curse was finally broken by the power of true love.
Justice and a Happy Ending
Raden Inu and Candra Kirana then returned to Daha Kingdom, accompanied by Mbok Rondo. King Kertamarta wept with joy seeing his beloved daughter return safely. Candra Kirana honestly told him everything that had happened, including Dewi Galuh’s betrayal.
Hearing of her sister’s return and knowing her evil deeds had been exposed, Dewi Galuh was overcome with tremendous fear. Before her father could pass judgment, Dewi Galuh fled the palace in the middle of the night and never returned. It is said she lived in eternal regret, a lesson that evil always returns to its perpetrator.
Finally, with great joy and attended by all the people, Raden Inu Kertapati and Dewi Candra Kirana held a grand wedding. Mbok Rondo, who had selflessly cared for Candra Kirana, was also brought to the palace and treated like family as gratitude for her extraordinary kindness.
